Airstream of South Carolina - Towing Guide

Towing an Airstream Bambi in South Carolina: Does Your SUV Make the Cut?

Thinking about towing an Airstream Bambi in SC? The team at Airstream of South Carolina breaks down which SUVs can handle it and what to check before heading to the Blue Ridge.

South Carolina has more Airstream-worthy camping areas than most people give it credit for. Congaree National Park, Hunting Island State Park, the Blue Ridge foothills near Greenville, and a quick haul to the Smoky Mountains all put serious destinations within reach of a Lexington driveway. The Airstream Bambi is the right size for all of it.

The question we hear most often at Airstream of South Carolina is whether a buyer’s current SUV is already up to the job. For the Bambi 16RB, the answer is often yes. For the 20FB and 22FB, it depends on what’s in your driveway. Here’s how to figure out where you stand.

Three Floor Plans, Three Different Requirements

Each Bambi floor plan has its own GVWR, and that number is what sets your tow vehicle requirements. The dry weight you see on a sticker or spec sheet isn’t the number to plan around.

💡 GVWR is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. It’s the most your trailer can weigh when it’s fully loaded, including gear, water, food, and anything else you pack. Match your tow vehicle to this number, not the trailer’s empty weight.

  • 🚘
Bambi 16RB - GVWR: 3,500 lbs The most towable of the three. A solid list of mid-size SUVs already in South Carolina driveways can handle it.
  • 🚗
Bambi 20FB - GVWR: 5,000 lbs More room and more kitchen. You’ll need a capable mid-size or full-size SUV to tow it.
  • 🚗
Bambi 22FB - GVWR: 5,000 lbs Same weight ceiling as the 20FB, different floor plan.

🚨 One thing to know: the 19CB floor plan was discontinued after 2024. If you’ve come across it in your research, it’s no longer in production.

What the Numbers Actually Mean for South Carolina Driving

The 80% rule is the standard most towing experts recommend. In other words, stay under 80% of your vehicle’s rated towing capacity. That cushion gives you a comfortable margin on grades and puts less stress on your drivetrain over time.

South Carolina covers a lot of ground when it comes to terrain. Towing from Lexington down to Hunting Island State Park means flat coastal highway the whole way. Head toward Table Rock or up I-26 into the mountains, and the grades get real fast. If you camp in both directions regularly, factor the harder terrain into your tow vehicle decision, not just the easy runs.

For the Bambi 16RB at 3,500 lbs GVWR, your tow vehicle needs to be rated for at least 4,375 lbs. For the 20FB and 22FB at 5,000 lbs, aim for a tow rating of 6,250 lbs or higher.

Real-world capacity also depends on what’s in the tow vehicle. A couple with a light load is a different scenario than a family of four with a week of camping gear for Myrtle Beach. Factor in your actual load, not a best-case estimate.

Tongue weight is the other number buyers frequently overlook. It’s the downward force the trailer puts on your hitch ball, and your SUV has a separate rating for it. Check your owner’s manual or the door jamb sticker.

Don’t Skip Your Tow Package Check

A lot of buyers assume their SUV is ready to tow just because it’s on the spec sheet. The reality is that many SUVs need the factory tow package to reach that rated capacity. Without it, your actual rating can be a lot lower.

The tow package typically includes an upgraded hitch receiver, trailer wiring, a transmission cooler, and sometimes a larger radiator. Contents vary by make and model. Not sure if yours has it? Bring it in and our service team at Airstream of South Carolina can check before you pick out a floor plan.

You’ll also need a brake controller for the Bambi’s electric brakes, which are standard on all floor plans. Most newer SUVs have one built in. Older models may need one added, but it’s a routine install our service department handles regularly.

🛑 Heads up: If you’re leasing your SUV, read the fine print. Some leases prohibit towing entirely.

Mid-Size SUVs That Handle the Bambi 16RB

At 3,500 lbs GVWR, the Bambi 16RB is within reach of a lot of mid-size SUVs already on South Carolina roads. Here are the most capable options with real tow ratings.

SUV Tow Rating (w/ pkg) Handles Which Bambi? Notes
Jeep Grand Cherokee (V6) 6,200 lbs 16RB, 20FB, 22FB Top community pick; tow package needed
Ford Explorer 5,000 lbs 16RB, 20FB, 22FB Tow package now standard on all 2026 trims
Toyota 4Runner 5,000–6,000 lbs 16RB, 20FB, 22FB Varies by trim; i-Force MAX needed for 6,000 lbs

Kia Telluride AWD 5,000 lbs 16RB, 20FB, 22FB Tow package required; strong value
Subaru Outback XT 3,500 lbs 16RB only Skip base CVT; XT trim preferred

Tow ratings vary by trim, drivetrain, and options. Always verify your specific VIN’s tow rating before purchasing a trailer.

Full-Size SUVs for the Bambi 20FB and 22FB

The 20FB and 22FB need a heavier-duty setup. Full-size SUVs are the right fit, and the extra capacity is worth having if you’re heading into the mountains regularly. These are the vehicles we see most often coming in for the larger Bambi floor plans.

SUV Tow Rating (w/ pkg) Handles Which Bambi? Notes
Chevrolet Tahoe / GMC Yukon 8,400 lbs All Bambi models Max Trailering Package required for top rating
Ford Expedition 9,600 lbs All Bambi models HD tow package required; standard-length 4x4 for max
Toyota Sequoia (Hybrid) 9,520 lbs All Bambi models Hybrid only; strong fuel economy while towing
Jeep Wagoneer 10,000 lbs All Bambi models HD tow package required for max rating
Rivian R1S (EV) 7,700 lbs All Bambi models WDH required for max; range drops ~50% when towing
BMW X5 7,200 lbs All Bambi models Factory hitch required; good match for luxury Airstream buyers

What South Carolina Airstream Buyers Are Driving

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most common vehicle we see paired with the Bambi 16RB at our Lexington location. It handles South Carolina’s mix of coastal and mountain terrain well, the V6 with the factory tow package is plenty for the 16RB, and it works as a practical daily driver the rest of the week.

The Kia Telluride AWD has become a strong option for buyers who want a capable midsize at a lower price point than the Grand Cherokee. At 5,000 lbs tow rating with the tow package, it covers the 16RB, 20FB, and 22FB. We’ve seen more of them on our lot in the past year.

The Ford Expedition is the go-to for buyers stepping up to the larger floor plans. The 9,600-lb rating with the HD package gives you room to grow, and it handles I-26 into the mountains without any strain.

The Rivian R1S comes up occasionally, but buyers heading into the mountains or toward the coast should plan their charging carefully. South Carolina’s charging network is improving but thinner in rural areas. If you’re camping at Congaree or Hunting Island, check your route before you leave.

SUV or Truck: What Works Best in South Carolina?

Trucks give you more raw towing capacity and better ground clearance. Body-on-frame SUVs like the 4Runner, Sequoia, and Wagoneer close that gap more than most people realize.

South Carolina’s terrain varies enough that it’s worth thinking about what you camp and how often. For coastal flat-ground camping at Hunting Island or Myrtle Beach, almost any capable midsize SUV does the job. For buyers who make regular runs to Table Rock State Park, the Smokies, or the Appalachian foothills, more towing headroom is genuinely useful.

Most buyers we work with use one vehicle for everything. An SUV handles the school run, the commute between Lexington and Columbia, and weekend camping trips without the bulk of a truck. If the Bambi is going out every few weekends and sitting the rest of the time, a capable midsize SUV is almost always the right call.

Check This List Before You Commit

Before you pick a floor plan or a tow vehicle, work through this list. Our team at Airstream of South Carolina can help with any of it.

  • 🏷️
Check your payload sticker on the door jamb It covers passengers, gear in the vehicle, and tongue weight combined.
  • 📦
Confirm your tow package Many SUVs need the factory option to reach their full rating.
  • 🚾
Check for a brake controller The Bambi has electric brakes standard across all floor plans. Your SUV needs to support them.
  • ⚖️
Consider a weight distribution hitch For the 20FB or 22FB, it improves stability at higher tongue weights and is worth having on mountain grades.
  • 📋
Read your lease agreement Some leases restrict or prohibit towing.
